Fabulous food, delicious drinks and captivating conversation were just the beginning to SDABJ’s 2015 scholarship reception. Café Bleu, Adams Avenue Grill, California Creole Catering and Bakery, Matua’s Sushi Bar and Islander Grill, Fitzee Foods and Grant Grill were on- hand to serve up some of their special food and drinks. The evening’s program began with words of inspiration from keynote speaker Ann Simmons, multimedia journalist from the Los Angeles Times. Ms. Simmons shared stories of her career as a foreign journalist. She explained how her uniqueness as a Black woman actually afforded her access to storytelling opportunities she might not have otherwise had. She imparted her wisdom to the stars of the evening; the scholarship recipients. San Diego city
councilwoman Myrtle Cole (Dist. 4) was on hand to present Lincoln High senior Diana Guerrero with the Debra Stephens Scholarship. Dominique Barrett was awarded the second of two high school scholarships we. Jordan Ligons took home the Ozzie Roberts scholarship to help her in her final year at Point Loma Nazarene College. The National University full ride scholarship was given to Renee Summerour. Renee will begin her studies while embarking on her new job at KYMA TV in Yuma, AZ.
