San Diego Association of Black Journalists Celebrates 25 Years of Uplifting Black Voices at Anniversary and Scholarship Reception

San Diego, CA – April 15, 2025 — The San Diego Association of Black Journalists (SDABJ) proudly celebrated a significant milestone on Friday, April 11, during its 25th Anniversary Celebration and Scholarship Reception at the beautiful University Club Atop Symphony Towers in downtown San Diego. The elegant evening brought together journalists, students, media leaders, and community supporters to acknowledge SDABJ’s quarter-century of advocacy, mentorship, and excellence in journalism.

Sara Sidner, national correspondent and co-anchor of CNN News Central, was the evening’s keynote speaker. She delivered a profoundly moving and motivational address that energized the audience, particularly the student honorees.

Four exceptional students—Monica Garcia, Clay Marshall, Paris Wilson, and Shyanne Smith — were awarded scholarships for their promise and dedication to media and storytelling.

The event also featured a special presentation from San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, who issued an official proclamation recognizing SDABJ’s 25 years of service to the community and its efforts to ensure fair and accurate representation in the media.

In recognition of long-standing support, SDABJ presented NBC 7 San Diego with the GEM Award (Going the Extra Mile) for over two decades of unwavering commitment to the organization’s mission and programs.

Another evening highlight was the presentation of the Jerry McCormick SDABJ Member of the Year Award, which was named in honor of SDABJ’s co-founder and media veteran. The 2025 honorees were Jerry McCormick and current SDABJ president Omari Fleming, who were recognized for their dedicated leadership and tireless commitment to growing and sustaining the chapter.

The event was a joyful and inspiring night of celebration, networking, and community-building, capping off 25 years of progress while looking ahead to SDABJ’s continued impact.

SDABJ extends its deepest gratitude to this year’s generous sponsors: Jamul Casino Resort, NBC 7 / Telemundo 20, Sycuan Casino Resort, Cox Communications, UC San Diego ArtPower, Cali-Comfort BBQ, La Jolla Playhouse, Scatena Daniels Communications, SeaWorld San Diego, and Sesame Place San Diego.
