To be a journalist is to take on an awesome responsibility. We report on events while being fair, accurate and balanced. If we are doing our jobs correctly our viewers and readers should have no idea of our personal feelings about our stories. Then along came 2020 with challenges for journalists. Beginning with the COVID-19 pandemic reporters were asked to cover a story that directly affected every person. When George Floyd, an unarmed Black man was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, it struck a chord with the thousands of Black journalists who had to report on the story while trying to process the magnitude of the continued indignities put upon the Black Community. In other words, we ARE the story. The San Diego Union Tribune reached out to several local current and former Black journalists and asked them to report on their feelings around the current events. Many of the essays are written by SDABJ members. KPBS radio also explored the challenges of being a journalist of color during these unparalleled times.
