What do you get when you take a “ripped from the headlines” story, 30 journalism students and a small but might group of professional journalists and throw them in a room for a day? You get an amazing experience for all concerned. That is exactly what happened at Southwestern College on November 21.
The students were treated to a primer in the fundamentals of journalism. Union-Tribune courts reporter, Dana Littlefield, shared her wisdom before we sent to students off to a mock news conference. The scenario dealt with the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement. Members of SDABJ improvised lines around a basic outline. We provided the students journalists with visuals and quotes from which they were able to construct their stories for either broadcast or online. The entire day was documented by the still photographers under the guidance of Union-Tribune photo editor David Poller and photographer John Gastaldo. One student even created an editorial cartoon. The day culminated with a critique of the stories the students produced. Their work can be seen at proforaday.wordpress.com
